  • WHAT IS STUDENT NURSES ASSOCIATION?
National Student Nurses Association, often abbreviated as NSNA, is a national non-profit nursing organization that was founded in 1952. SNA has been open to associate, baccalaureate, diploma, and generic graduate nursing programs. NSNA’s mission is to mentor students preparing for initial licensure as registered nurses, and to convey the standards, ethics, and skills that students will need as responsible and accountable leaders and members of the profession. CSULA SNA is one of the recognized chapters and not only do we accept nursing students, we also have been openly welcoming pre-nursing students since Fall 2017. We hope to implement a mentorship program in which nursing students serve as mentors for pre-nursing members. Through our events, we aim to foster every member to get to know and network with others from different cohorts. We actively participate in walks in the vicinity of Los Angeles and provide various opportunities for members to hone their basic nursing skills. In the past, students had the chance to provide first aid and medical attention to walk participants in LA Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon. Annually, we have many events that allow students to provide blood pressure screenings. Since Spring 2019, SNA was granted the opportunity to learn a new skill -- to provide BMI screenings to high school students.
  • WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO BEING AN SNA MEMBER?
As an SNA member, you are part of a national organization that is dedicated to helping the community, thus enhancing your experience as a nursing student here at CSULA. SNA is an organization present around the nation and because of that, many conferences are held around the nation each year that we can participate in and provide feedback regarding the art of nursing. If you also go on the NSNA website, you can see the numerous discounts you can get from scrub stores, Office Depot, and much more. You can also apply for scholarships that are offered annually. Several events are organized for SNA to represent CSULA's nursing out in the community and as a result, members of SNA have a great time with each other. After each event completed, you will receive an official certificate that you can add to your resume as your portfolio builds. At the end of the year, we host an annual "Recognition Day" where we recognize all our members and officers for their dedication and hard work to SNA.
  • I am currently a Pre-Nursing student. Can I join SNA?
Yes, you can! We have been accepting CSULA Pre-Nursing students since Fall 2017. Joining SNA before nursing school can help foster friendships with upperclassmen who are already in the program. You can gain new insight on how to pass your classes, how to study and adequately prepare for the TEAS exam, and how to apply for nursing programs through NursingCAS. It is also beneficial to start to participating in community events we host in order to strengthen your nursing portfolio!
  • How and why should I become an officer?
Every year, we have at least one position open -- typically the Class Delegate position. We also offer intern positions for any positions currently occupied by senior nursing students or by students will have confirmed they will not continue during the next academic year. If you are interested, please fill out our SNA Officer Application and then email it to sna_csula@yahoo.com. More details about available positions are located in the Home page under Announcements. Currently, our board is composed of a mix of senior and second-year nursing students, which means that will be searching for first and second year nursing students to take over our positions for the following year. Keep in mind what positions you would be interested in running for as our current members will train you their duties and roles in SNA. Being an officer means strengthening your leadership and organizational skills, not to mention a boost on your resume! Officers will also receive a cord designated for student leaders, which is slightly different than the typical member graduation cords passed out during Recognition Day. Officer certificates are also handed out during our banquet.
  • What is considered an event?
In order to be considered an event, it must be announced as an event here in the "Announcements" on the Home page OR an event created through Facebook. You may not volunteer at any event where an officer is not present and have it counted as one of your two mandatory events. Fundraisers to raise money for SNA will be held either or both on- and/or off-campus. Buying our merchandise will also count as a fundraiser. If present at fundraisers, this will count as an event. Most volunteering events will be held off campus, so carpooling situations will be arranged prior to the actual event date.
  • How do I know how many events I have completed?
Click on this link or head to our "Memberships" tab in the Dashboard, hover down to "Current Status" and click on "Completed Events".
  • How do I know when my membership expires?
Click on this link or head to our "Memberships" tab in the Dashboard, hover down to "Current Status" and click on "Expiration Date".
  • What if I can't make two events and one meeting each semester?
If you cannot make the minimum requirements of two events and one meeting per semester, please contact us as soon as you believe that you will not be able to meet the requirements. We, as officers, will try to find more events or we can have you attend a make-up event. In the event that those options still do not lead up to the two event and one meeting requirement, unfortunately, you will not be considered an active member of SNA and will have to renew your membership again in the following academic year.
  • What if I have an idea for an event?
If you have an idea for an event or fundraiser, please feel free to contact any board member or send us an email at the contact link at the bottom. Our officers will do our best to carry out this event and sharing it with the rest of the organization. We appreciate any ideas or suggestions!
  • When/where are meetings held at?
Meetings will be either held once a month in a reserved room in the University-Student Union, or before one of your lecture classes. For any meetings within a classroom, your respective Class Delegate will conduct the meeting and inform your entire cohort. See the calendar of meeting times/dates for this semester in the “Events” tab.
  • Where does the money being fundraised for SNA go towards?
The money made from fundraisers and selling our merchandise goes towards funding for Recognition Day, an end-of-the-year banquet that celebrates active seniors for completing their last year in the nursing program and awards them with a graduation cord. Funds also go towards printing out certificates, catering, decoration, goodie bags, and giveaway prizes. We also aim to fundraise as much as possible for CSULA SNA members to attend the annual National Student Nurses' Convention. Every year, thousands of SNA members meet up at a convention center to take part in the legislative process. As students, we have the opportunity to propose resolutions that are voted or revised on for submission to congress and professional organizations. NCLEX study guides and tips are reviewed, lectures are presented, and colleagues are met from all around the nation. Due to the extent of this event, travel funds, lodging fees, and convention admissions are fundraised for in order to provide as many SNA members as possible to attend. Depending on how much we are able to fundraise for SNA each year, a select few active members will be able to attend with our president and co-president.
  • What are meeting minutes?
Meeting minutes are our way of documenting what goes on during each officer meeting and each general meeting. In the event that you are not able to attend a meeting, these meeting minutes are available for you to read to be caught up on the most recent news of SNA.
  • How do I contact SNA?
Please send us an email to sna_csula@yahoo.com. You can also scroll to the bottom of the website and will have a "contact" section where you can fill in your name, subject, and message and will be directly relayed to us SNA officers. Please utilize your class delegates as a resource for information or updates, but all other officers are also available for all inquiries.
